MOE aspires to create an “exciting environment” by 2025...
But where are we now?
Every year, hundreds of million are allocated to repair about 500 dilapidated schools particularly in Sabah and Sarawak out of over 10,000 public schools in Malaysia. This shows that focus of physical learning environments at the Ministry level is often limited to overhaul works, forcing teachers to take proactive actions to redesign their spaces.
The ministry acknowledges that transformative efforts will take time, as mentioned in the MEB 2013-2025, but without streamlined processes and decentralised decision-making, the aspiration for 21st Century Learning environments remains out of reach, and keeps being at a slower pace for those in West Malaysia.
Hence, Ruang2Gather is initiated to pilot strategic collaborations between three distinct communities, despite the lack of federal fundings.
Building shared Senses of Empathy, Ownership and Responsibility.
Another key element of this collaborative effort is the "Implementation Incentive" starting at RM1300 for schools to realise the design ideas after completing all four phases.
Rooted in the national aspiration for Community-Own Schools and Private-Public Partnership, Ruang2Gather currently operates as a partial pro bono service to revamp a learning space, especially the school libraries (and other alternative learning centres including the community libraries).
